श्री भगवानुवाच

इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम्‌ ।

विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत्‌ ॥

śrī bhagavānuvāca

imaṅ vivasvatē yōgaṅ prōktavānahamavyayam.

vivasvān manavē prāha manurikṣvākavē.bravīt৷৷4.1৷৷

Meaning: Shri Bhagwan said – I told this imperishable Yoga to Surya, Surya told it to his son Vaivasvat Manu and Manu told it to his son King Ikshvaku ॥1॥

एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः ।

स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्टः परन्तप ॥

ēvaṅ paramparāprāptamimaṅ rājarṣayō viduḥ.

sa kālēnēha mahatā yōgō naṣṭaḥ parantapa৷৷4.2৷৷

Meaning: Oh Parantap Arjuna! In this way, the royal sages came to know this yoga received from tradition, but after that that yoga became extinct in this earth world for a long time ॥2॥

स एवायं मया तेऽद्य योगः प्रोक्तः पुरातनः ।

भक्तोऽसि मे सखा चेति रहस्यं ह्येतदुत्तमम्‌ ॥

sa ēvāyaṅ mayā tē.dya yōgaḥ prōktaḥ purātanaḥ.

bhaktō.si mē sakhā cēti rahasyaṅ hyētaduttamam৷৷4.3৷৷

Meaning: You are my devotee and dear friend, that’s why I have told you this ancient yoga today because it is a very good secret, that is, a subject worth keeping secret ॥3॥

अर्जुन उवाच

अपरं भवतो जन्म परं जन्म विवस्वतः ।

कथमेतद्विजानीयां त्वमादौ प्रोक्तवानिति ॥

arjuna uvāca

aparaṅ bhavatō janma paraṅ janma vivasvataḥ.

kathamētadvijānīyāṅ tvamādau prōktavāniti৷৷4.4৷৷

Meaning: Arjuna said – Your birth is very recent and the Sun’s birth is very old, that is, it had happened in the beginning of Kalpa. Then how can I understand that it was you who said this yoga to the Sun at the beginning of the Kalpa?॥4॥

श्रीभगवानुवाच 

बहूनि मे व्यतीतानि जन्मानि तव चार्जुन ।

तान्यहं वेद सर्वाणि न त्वं वेत्थ परन्तप ॥

śrī bhagavānuvāca

bahūni mē vyatītāni janmāni tava cārjuna.

tānyahaṅ vēda sarvāṇi na tvaṅ vēttha parantapa৷৷4.5৷৷

Meaning: Shri Bhagwan said – Oh Parantap Arjun! You and I have had many births. You don’t know them all, but I know ॥5॥

अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि सन्‌ ।

प्रकृतिं स्वामधिष्ठाय सम्भवाम्यात्ममायया ॥

ajō.pi sannavyayātmā bhūtānāmīśvarō.pi san.

prakṛtiṅ svāmadhiṣṭhāya saṅbhavāmyātmamāyayā৷৷4.6৷৷

Meaning: Despite being unborn and imperishable and being the God of all beings, I appear through my yogamaya by subduing my nature.॥6॥

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत ।

अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्‌ ॥

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānirbhavati bhārata.

abhyutthānamadharmasya tadā৷৷tmānaṅ sṛjāmyaham৷৷4.7৷৷

Meaning: O India! Whenever there is a loss of religion and an increase of unrighteousness, then only I create my form, that is, I appear in front of people in a real form ॥7॥

परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम्‌ ।

धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे ॥

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṅ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām.

dharmasaṅsthāpanārthāya saṅbhavāmi yugē yugē৷৷4.8৷৷

Meaning: In order to save the virtuous, to destroy those who do sinful deeds and to establish Dharma well, I appear in every age ॥8॥

जन्म कर्म च मे दिव्यमेवं यो वेत्ति तत्वतः ।

त्यक्तवा देहं पुनर्जन्म नैति मामेति सोऽर्जुन ॥

janma karma ca mē divyamēvaṅ yō vētti tattvataḥ.

tyaktvā dēhaṅ punarjanma naiti māmēti sō.rjuna৷৷4.9৷৷

Meaning: Hey Arjun! My birth and deeds are divine i.e. pure and supernatural – in such a way that from the human element (Almighty, Sachchidanandan Paramatma Aj And the ultimate movement and the ultimate support of all beings, they appear in the form of Yogamaya only to establish Dharma and to save the world. That’s why thinking that there is no one else like God, there is no one else who is friendly, loving and purifier of the sinful ones.Constantly thinking of God with exclusive love, he behaves in the world without attachment, he knows Him in essence.) He knows, he does not get rebirth after leaving the body, but I get it only ॥9॥

वीतरागभय क्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिताः ।

बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागताः ॥

vītarāgabhayakrōdhā manmayā māmupāśritāḥ.

bahavō jñānatapasā pūtā madbhāvamāgatāḥ৷৷4.10৷৷

Meaning: In the past too, many devotees who depended on me, whose attachment, fear and anger were completely destroyed and who remained in me with unrequited love, have attained my form after being purified by the austerity mentioned above in the form of knowledge.॥10 ॥

ये यथा माँ प्रपद्यन्ते तांस्तथैव भजाम्यहम्‌ ।

मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्याः पार्थ सर्वशः ॥

yē yathā māṅ prapadyantē tāṅstathaiva bhajāmyaham.

mama vartmānuvartantē manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ৷৷4.11৷৷

Meaning: Hey Arjun! The devotees who worship me in the same way, I also worship them because all human beings follow my path in every way ॥11॥

काङ्‍क्षन्तः कर्मणां सिद्धिं यजन्त इह देवताः ।

क्षिप्रं हि मानुषे लोके सिद्धिर्भवति कर्मजा ॥

kāṅkṣantaḥ karmaṇāṅ siddhiṅ yajanta iha dēvatāḥ.

kṣipraṅ hi mānuṣē lōkē siddhirbhavati karmajā৷৷4.12৷৷

Meaning: In this human world, people who want the fruits of their actions worship the deities because they get the success that comes from their actions very quickly ॥12॥

चातुर्वर्ण्यं मया सृष्टं गुणकर्मविभागशः ।

तस्य कर्तारमपि मां विद्धयकर्तारमव्ययम्‌ ॥

cāturvarṇyaṅ mayā sṛṣṭaṅ guṇakarmavibhāgaśaḥ.

tasya kartāramapi māṅ viddhyakartāramavyayam৷৷4.13৷৷

Meaning: Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras – the group of these four varnas, has been created by me according to their qualities and deeds. In this way, in spite of being the doer of the work of creation and creation, in reality you should consider me the imperishable God as non-doer ॥13॥

न मां कर्माणि लिम्पन्ति न मे कर्मफले स्पृहा ।

इति मां योऽभिजानाति कर्मभिर्न स बध्यते ॥

na māṅ karmāṇi limpanti na mē karmaphalē spṛhā.

iti māṅ yō.bhijānāti karmabhirna sa badhyatē৷৷4.14৷৷

Meaning: I am not interested in the fruits of my actions, that’s why I do not indulge in actions – thus the one who knows me in essence, he also does not get bound by actions ॥14॥

एवं ज्ञात्वा कृतं कर्म पूर्वैरपि मुमुक्षुभिः ।

कुरु कर्मैव तस्मात्वं पूर्वैः पूर्वतरं कृतम्‌ ॥

ēvaṅ jñātvā kṛtaṅ karma pūrvairapi mumukṣubhiḥ.

kuru karmaiva tasmāttvaṅ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraṅ kṛtam৷৷4.15৷৷

Meaning: In the past, Mumukshus also performed actions knowing this way, so you also do the actions that were always performed by the ancestors ॥15॥

कर्म-विकर्म एवं अकर्म की व्याख्या

किं कर्म किमकर्मेति कवयोऽप्यत्र मोहिताः ।

तत्ते कर्म प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात्‌॥

kiṅ karma kimakarmēti kavayō.pyatra mōhitāḥ.

tattē karma pravakṣyāmi yajjñātvā mōkṣyasē.śubhāt৷৷4.16৷৷

Meaning: What is Karma? And what is inaction? Thus even wise men are deluded in deciding it. That’s why I will explain to you that principle of action, knowing which you will be free from inauspiciousness, that is, from the bondage of karma ॥16॥

कर्मणो ह्यपि बोद्धव्यं बोद्धव्यं च विकर्मणः ।

अकर्मणश्च बोद्धव्यं गहना कर्मणो गतिः ॥

karmaṇō hyapi bōddhavyaṅ bōddhavyaṅ ca vikarmaṇaḥ.

akarmaṇaśca bōddhavyaṅ gahanā karmaṇō gatiḥ৷৷4.17৷৷

Meaning: One should know the nature of action and one should also know the nature of inaction and one should also know the nature of sinful action because the speed of action is deep ॥17॥

कर्मण्य कर्म यः पश्येदकर्मणि च कर्म यः ।

स बुद्धिमान्मनुष्येषु स युक्तः कृत्स्नकर्मकृत्‌ ॥

karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśyēdakarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ.

sa buddhimān manuṣyēṣu sa yuktaḥ kṛtsnakarmakṛt৷৷4.18৷৷

Meaning: The man who sees inaction in action and the one who sees action in inaction, he is wise among men and that yogi is the one who does all actions ॥18॥

कर्म में अकर्मता-भाव, नैराश्य-सुख, यज्ञ की व्याख्या

यस्य सर्वे समारम्भाः कामसंकल्पवर्जिताः ।

ज्ञानाग्निदग्धकर्माणं तमाहुः पंडितं बुधाः ॥

yasya sarvē samārambhāḥ kāmasaṅkalpavarjitāḥ.

jñānāgnidagdhakarmāṇaṅ tamāhuḥ paṇḍitaṅ budhāḥ৷৷4.19৷৷

Meaning: The great man whose all scripture-based actions are performed without desire and determination and whose all actions are burnt to ashes by the fire of knowledge, that great man is also called a pundit by the learned ॥19॥

त्यक्त्वा कर्मफलासङ्गं नित्यतृप्तो निराश्रयः ।

कर्मण्यभिप्रवृत्तोऽपि नैव किंचित्करोति सः ॥

tyaktvā karmaphalāsaṅgaṅ nityatṛptō nirāśrayaḥ.

karmaṇyabhipravṛttō.pi naiva kiñcitkarōti saḥ৷৷4.20৷৷

Meaning: The man who has completely given up attachment to all actions and their fruits and has become free from the shelter of the world and is eternally satisfied in God, he does nothing in reality even though he behaves well in actions ॥20॥

निराशीर्यतचित्तात्मा त्यक्तसर्वपरिग्रहः ।

शारीरं केवलं कर्म कुर्वन्नाप्नोति किल्बिषम्‌ ॥

nirāśīryatacittātmā tyaktasarvaparigrahaḥ.

śārīraṅ kēvalaṅ karma kurvannāpnōti kilbiṣam৷৷4.21৷৷

Meaning: Whose body with the mind and senses is alive and who has renounced all the material objects of enjoyment, such a hopeless person does not get sins even while doing only bodily activities.॥21॥

यदृच्छालाभसंतुष्टो द्वंद्वातीतो विमत्सरः ।

समः सिद्धावसिद्धौ च कृत्वापि न निबध्यते ॥

yadṛcchālābhasantuṣṭō dvandvātītō vimatsaraḥ.

samaḥ siddhāvasiddhau ca kṛtvāpi na nibadhyatē৷৷4.22৷৷

Meaning: The one who is always satisfied with the things that are obtained automatically without any desire, in whom there is complete absence of jealousy, who has gone beyond the dualities of joy and sorrow etc. Even while doing it doesn’t bind them ॥22॥

गतसङ्‍गस्य मुक्तस्य ज्ञानावस्थितचेतसः ।

यज्ञायाचरतः कर्म समग्रं प्रविलीयते ॥

gatasaṅgasya muktasya jñānāvasthitacētasaḥ.

yajñāyācarataḥ karma samagraṅ pravilīyatē৷৷4.23৷৷

Meaning: Whose attachment is completely destroyed, who has become free from body-pride and affection, whose mind is constantly fixed in the knowledge of the Supreme Soul – such a person who works only for the performance of the Yagya, all the actions of a person get completely dissolved.॥23 ॥

 फलसहित विभिन्न यज्ञों का वर्णन

ब्रह्मार्पणं ब्रह्म हविर्ब्रह्माग्रौ ब्रह्मणा हुतम्‌ ।

ब्रह्मैव तेन गन्तव्यं ब्रह्मकर्मसमाधिना ॥

brahmārpaṇaṅ brahmahavirbrahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam.

brahmaiva tēna gantavyaṅ brahmakarmasamādhinā৷৷4.24৷৷

Meaning: The Yagya in which the offering i.e. Sruva etc. is also Brahman and the substance that can be sacrificed is also Brahman and the act of offering sacrifice in the form of Brahman fire by the doer in the form of Brahman is also Brahman – the fruits that can be obtained by the Yogi who is situated in that Brahmankarma. Brahma is only ॥24॥

दैवमेवापरे यज्ञं योगिनः पर्युपासते ।

ब्रह्माग्नावपरे यज्ञं यज्ञेनैवोपजुह्वति ॥

daivamēvāparē yajñaṅ yōginaḥ paryupāsatē.

brahmāgnāvaparē yajñaṅ yajñēnaivōpajuhvati৷৷4.25৷৷

Meaning: Other yogis perform well the rituals of the Yagya in the form of worship of the gods and other Yogis perform the self-form Yagya through the Yagya in the form of inseparable vision in the fire of Parabrahma Paramatmar. (Staying united with the supreme soul through knowledge is like performing a yagya in the form of Brahman fire by performing a yajna.) ॥25॥

श्रोत्रादीनीन्द्रियाण्यन्ये संयमाग्निषु जुह्वति।

शब्दादीन्विषयानन्य इन्द्रियाग्निषु जुह्वति ॥

śrōtrādīnīndriyāṇyanyē saṅyamāgniṣu juhvati.

śabdādīnviṣayānanya indriyāgniṣu juhvati৷৷4.26৷৷

Meaning: Other yogis sacrifice all the senses like hearing and hearing in the fire in the form of restraint and other yogis sacrifice all the objects of words etc. in the fire of the senses ॥26॥

सर्वाणीन्द्रियकर्माणि प्राणकर्माणि चापरे ।

आत्मसंयमयोगाग्नौ जुह्वति ज्ञानदीपिते ॥

sarvāṇīndriyakarmāṇi prāṇakarmāṇi cāparē.

ātmasaṅyamayōgāgnau juhvati jñānadīpitē৷৷4.27৷৷

Meaning: Other yogis perform Havan in the fire of self-restraint, yoga, all the functions of the senses and all the functions of the soul (not to think of anyone other than the Supreme Soul, is to perform Havan of all of them.) ॥27॥

द्रव्ययज्ञास्तपोयज्ञा योगयज्ञास्तथापरे ।

स्वाध्यायज्ञानयज्ञाश्च यतयः संशितव्रताः ॥

dravyayajñāstapōyajñā yōgayajñāstathāparē.

svādhyāyajñānayajñāśca yatayaḥ saṅśitavratāḥ৷৷4.28৷৷

Meaning: There are many men who perform Yagya in the form of material things, there are many who perform Yagya in the form of austerity and there are many others who perform Yagya in the form of yoga, there are many men who are diligent with non-violence fasts, they are the ones who do the Yagya in the form of self-study ॥28॥

अपाने जुह्वति प्राणं प्राणेऽपानं तथापरे ।

प्राणापानगती रुद्ध्वा प्राणायामपरायणाः ॥

अपरे नियताहाराः प्राणान्प्राणेषु जुह्वति ।

सर्वेऽप्येते यज्ञविदो यज्ञक्षपितकल्मषाः ॥

apānē juhvati prāṇa prāṇē.pānaṅ tathā.parē.

prāṇāpānagatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇāḥ৷৷4.29৷৷

aparē niyatāhārāḥ prāṇānprāṇēṣu juhvati.

sarvē.pyētē yajñavidō yajñakṣapitakalmaṣāḥ৷৷4.30৷৷

Meaning: As many other yogis sacrifice the life air in the apan air, in the same way, other yogis offer the fire air in the life air and how many other yogis do regular diet (should see in Gita Adhyay 6 Shlok 17). And by stopping the movement of apana, they perform havan to the soul in the soul itself. All these sadhakas are the ones who destroy the sins through Yagyas and know Yagyas ॥29-30॥

यज्ञशिष्टामृतभुजो यान्ति ब्रह्म सनातनम्‌ ।

नायं लोकोऽस्त्ययज्ञस्य कुतोऽन्यः कुरुसत्तम ॥

yajñaśiṣṭāmṛtabhujō yānti brahma sanātanam.

nāyaṅ lōkō.styayajñasya kutō.nyaḥ kurusattama৷৷4.31৷৷

Meaning: Oh Arjuna, the best of the Kurus! The yogis who experience the nectar left over from the Yagya attain the eternal Parabrahma Paramatma. And even this human world is not pleasant for a man who does not perform Yajna, then how can the hereafter be pleasant?॥31॥

एवं बहुविधा यज्ञा वितता ब्रह्मणो मुखे ।

कर्मजान्विद्धि तान्सर्वानेवं ज्ञात्वा विमोक्ष्यसे ॥

ēvaṅ bahuvidhā yajñā vitatā brahmaṇō mukhē.

karmajānviddhi tānsarvānēvaṅ jñātvā vimōkṣyasē৷৷4.32৷৷

Meaning: Similarly, many other types of Yagya have been described in detail in the speech of the Vedas. Know them all to be accomplished by the action of the mind, senses and body, thus knowing them from the element, you will be completely free from the bondage of karma by their rituals ॥32॥

श्रेयान्द्रव्यमयाद्यज्ञाज्ज्ञानयज्ञः परन्तप ।

सर्वं कर्माखिलं पार्थ ज्ञाने परिसमाप्यते ॥

śrēyāndravyamayādyajñājjñānayajñaḥ parantapa.

sarvaṅ karmākhilaṅ pārtha jñānē parisamāpyatē৷৷4.33৷৷

Meaning: Oh Parantap Arjun! The yagya of knowledge is more superior than the yagya of matter, and almost all actions end in knowledge ॥33॥

ज्ञान की महिमा तथा अर्जुन को कर्म करने की प्रेरणा

तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया ।

उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्वदर्शिनः ॥

tadviddhi praṇipātēna paripraśnēna sēvayā.

upadēkṣyanti tē jñānaṅ jñāninastattvadarśinaḥ৷৷4.34৷৷

Meaning: Understand that knowledge by going to the Tatvdarshi wise ones, by paying obeisance to them, by serving them and leaving hypocrisy and asking simple questions, those wise Mahatmas who know the divine element very well will teach you that Tatvgyan ॥34॥

यज्ज्ञात्वा न पुनर्मोहमेवं यास्यसि पाण्डव ।

येन भुतान्यशेषेण द्रक्ष्यस्यात्मन्यथो मयि ॥

yajjñātvā na punarmōhamēvaṅ yāsyasi pāṇḍava.

yēna bhūtānyaśēṣēṇa drakṣyasyātmanyathō mayi৷৷4.35৷৷

Meaning: Knowing whom you will not be deluded like this and O Arjuna! By the knowledge by which you will see all the ghosts first in yourself (Gita Adhyay 6 Shlok 29.) And then you will see me in Sachchidanandaghan Parmatma. (Should be seen in Gita Adhyay 6 Shlok 30.) ॥35॥

अपि चेदसि पापेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः पापकृत्तमः ।

सर्वं ज्ञानप्लवेनैव वृजिनं सन्तरिष्यसि ॥

api cēdasi pāpēbhyaḥ sarvēbhyaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ.

sarvaṅ jñānaplavēnaiva vṛjinaṅ santariṣyasi৷৷4.36৷৷

Meaning: Even if you are the most sinful of all other sinners, you will undoubtedly cross the entire ocean of sin by the boat of knowledge ॥36॥

यथैधांसि समिद्धोऽग्निर्भस्मसात्कुरुतेऽर्जुन ।

ज्ञानाग्निः सर्वकर्माणि भस्मसात्कुरुते तथा ॥

yathaidhāṅsi samiddhō.gnirbhasmasātkurutē.rjuna.

jñānāgniḥ sarvakarmāṇi bhasmasātkurutē tathā৷৷4.37৷৷

Meaning: Because O Arjuna! Just as a kindled fire reduces fuel to ashes, so does the fire of knowledge reduce all actions to ashes ॥37॥

न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते ।

तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्धः कालेनात्मनि विन्दति ॥

na hi jñānēna sadṛśaṅ pavitramiha vidyatē.

tatsvayaṅ yōgasaṅsiddhaḥ kālēnātmani vindati৷৷4.38৷৷

Meaning: There is no doubt in this world that there is nothing as purifying as knowledge. A man who has been purified through Karma Yoga for a long time automatically receives that knowledge in the soul ॥38॥

श्रद्धावाँल्लभते ज्ञानं तत्परः संयतेन्द्रियः ।

ज्ञानं लब्धवा परां शान्तिमचिरेणाधिगच्छति ॥

śraddhāvāōllabhatē jñānaṅ tatparaḥ saṅyatēndriyaḥ.

jñānaṅ labdhvā parāṅ śāntimacirēṇādhigacchati৷৷4.39৷৷

Meaning: Jitendriya, Sadhanparayan and Shraddhvaan man gets knowledge and after getting knowledge, without any delay, he immediately attains supreme peace in the form of Bhagavatprapti ॥39॥

अज्ञश्चश्रद्दधानश्च संशयात्मा विनश्यति ।

नायं लोकोऽस्ति न परो न सुखं संशयात्मनः ॥

ajñaścāśraddadhānaśca saṅśayātmā vinaśyati.

nāyaṅ lōkō.sti na parō na sukhaṅ saṅśayātmanaḥ৷৷4.40৷৷

Meaning: A person who is skeptical and without faith, definitely gets corrupted by God. There is neither this world, nor the hereafter, nor happiness for such a doubting person ॥40॥

योगसन्नयस्तकर्माणं ज्ञानसञ्न्निसंशयम्‌ ।

आत्मवन्तं न कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय ॥

yōgasaṅnyastakarmāṇaṅ jñānasaṅchinnasaṅśayam.

ātmavantaṅ na karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya৷৷4.41৷৷

Meaning: Hey Dhananjay! One who has surrendered all his actions to God by the method of Karmayoga and who has destroyed all doubts through discretion, such a person with a controlled conscience is not bound by karma ॥41॥

तस्मादज्ञानसम्भूतं हृत्स्थं ज्ञानासिनात्मनः ।

छित्वैनं संशयं योगमातिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भारत ॥

tasmādajñānasaṅbhūtaṅ hṛtsthaṅ jñānāsinā৷৷tmanaḥ.

chittvainaṅ saṅśayaṅ yōgamātiṣṭhōttiṣṭha bhārata৷৷4.42৷৷

Meaning: That’s why O Bharatvanshi Arjun! By piercing this ignorance of your doubt in the heart with the sword of discretion, become established in the form of equanimity in karma and stand up for the battle ॥42॥

ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासूपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे
